A Different Perspective

Family Reports

What is a Family Report?
A Family Report is an independent and comprehensive assessment designed to help parents, caregivers, and the Court make decisions that are in the best interest of the children involved.

For more details, refer to the Family Report Fact Sheet:

https://www.fcfcoa.gov.au/fl/pubs/family-reports

How is a Family Report Conducted?
The process typically involves individual interviews with each parent or caregiver, other relevant parties (such as partners or grandparents), and each child over five years old. The report writer may also conduct observations of interactions between the children and each parent/caregiver if appropriate. Interviews with adults and some teenage children can be done online, while younger children and parent-child observations are usually done in person.

The assessment covers a range of relevant topics, such as the disputed issues; any risks to children, adults, or the family unit; each child’s relationships, needs, and preferences in the context of their individual circumstances; co-parental and adult relationships; parental capacity; and any additional issues specified by the Court or involved parties.

The Report Writer will review documents filed in court or prepared jointly by the parties or their legal representatives. This generally includes applications, responses, and letters of instruction. If an order permits, subpoenaed materials can also be reviewed if deemed helpful for the assessment.

A thorough written report will be prepared, summarising information gathered from the parties, other adults, and the children, as well as observations. It will include an analysis and evaluation of key issues, along with recommendations on the children’s future care, welfare, and development.

The Report Writer prioritises safety throughout the process, carefully deciding on the methods and timing of interviews, observations, and report release based on clinical assessments.

Costs
A standard Private Family Report costs $8,500 plus GST, with costs generally split equally between the parties unless otherwise agreed. For cases involving more than two adult parties, more than three children, or substantial documents or subpoenaed materials, higher fees may apply. Please inquire about fees for Update Reports, Limited Issues Reports, or follow-up Reports where an Initial Assessment and Advice have already been completed.

If the Report Writer is required to testify in court, preparation fees (e.g., reviewing new materials) are $150 per hour, and the fee for providing evidence is $180 per hour.
