Change the way the story ends........

Domestic Violence

As a Domestic and Family Violence (DFV) Counsellor I endeavour to provide support, guidance, and intervention to individuals affected by domestic and family violence. My primary goal is to ensure the safety and well-being of my clients while assisting them to work through the emotional, psychological, and practical impacts of abuse. I work with my clients through the many and varied facets of domestic and family violence that they may be experiencing from a partner, family member, or other close relation including physical, emotional, psychological, sexual, or financial abuse. I also assist by providing advocacy where necessary and making referrals to other supports and services.

Following is a list of the supports I endeavour to supply to my clients:

Risk Assessment and Safety Planning: I work with my clients to conduct thorough assessments to evaluate the client’s level of risk, often using validated risk assessment tools. Based on the risk, I will work with my clients to develop personalised safety plans, including emergency contacts, escape strategies, and resources for immediate protection.

Emotional Support and Counselling: I offer trauma-informed counselling to help clients process their experiences, reduce feelings of shame or guilt, and rebuild self-esteem. At this time I am only offering individual sessions but I am working on the provision of group sessions in the near future.

Education and Awareness: DFV counsellors educate clients on the dynamics of abuse, helping them recognize patterns of behaviour that may be manipulative, coercive, or controlling. This education empowers clients to make informed decisions about their relationships and personal boundaries.

Resource and Referral Assistance: I endeavour to provide referrals to appropriate support services if and when required. These services include legal aid, housing support, financial assistance, healthcare, and crisis intervention services. I also provide links to law enforcement, legal services, and community organisations to ensure a coordinated response.

Advocacy: I provide advocacy for my clients and assist them to have a voice to advocate for themselves within systems that may include courts, law enforcement, and social services, ensuring their voices are heard and their needs are met. This can involve providing reports or accompanying clients to court for support.

Long-term Support and Recovery: Beyond immediate safety, my goals when working with my clients is to assist them to work toward long-term recovery, focusing on strategies for personal growth, independence, and rebuilding their lives. This includes helping clients identify healthy relationship patterns, set personal goals, and access ongoing mental health support.
